Craftsman 21hp electric start 42″ mower, 6 speed transaxle lawn tractor model number 917.271832 LT1000. I can’t stop the flywheel spinning so can’t get the bolt off to remove it. A screwdriver doesn’t stop it moving.

Take cover off. U should be able to wedge a pry bar in to loosen bolt out.

The flywheel isn’t held on with a bolt, its a nut… Some have used vise grips, wood, crowbars…. etc…, these methods may end up breaking a fin off the flywheel (if all steel) and leave it off balance some… if plastic it can’t be done…

What you do is put a little rope into the spark plug hole, this will stop the piston, then wrench on it.

Try using a pipe wrench on the bottom end (output shaft)of the motor…. or at least engage all of the drives….. such as mower blades, transmission etc….. and make sure the retainer bolt is not left handed threads…. sometimes it takes two people to get it off…. have fun…….

      Use an impact wrench.

if you have access to an electric or air impact gun and correct socket size would certainly make it easy.i would not recommend using a screwdriver to jam the ring gear because you run the risk of breaking the ring gear or worse yet breaking off a component.once you get the bolt out you will still need a set of pullers to remove the flywheel off the tapered shaft.my advice to you would be to take it to a reputable small engine shop or sears service centre and save yourself a lot of time and aggravation and possibly a lot of money.sincerely William h former sears lg tech
