GAIL asked:
I have a craftsman air compressor model no 919.165250 5hp, 25 gal tank that has started to act strange. Two weeks ago I used it and all was fine, yesterday I plugged it in, it ran for about 10 seconds dimming a florescence light, running at about quarter speed, and then kicking the breaker. I tried it on different circuits same result. Any ideas as to what the problem is. In the few seconds it runs it does produce a couple of pounds of pressure.

Either the start capacitor went bad, or the centrifugal switch for the start windings, or the start windings, went bad.
If it is the capacitor, it will work fine when you replace it, if it doesn’t, it’s time to get a new motor.
Sounds like the run winding may be shorted.
